Bible – Sanford and Jane Higginbotham |
This bible was burned during the War Between the States when a Union Soldier threw it into the fire on Sanford’s Plantation, in Fordyce Arkansas. Sanford’s Head Slave, pulled it out of the fire, to save it for the family.

Thank you so much for the information you have collected. I am a descendant of Mary Jane Willis Bloodworth, daughter of Paul Willis and Matilda Higgenbotham. Mary Jane was married to James Bloodworth, father of my great grandfather, Pinkney Oliver Bloodworth.

Hi Jason, glad you left a comment. You should check the Dawes Packet section on my website if you haven’t already got that information, it could be helpful to you. If you have anything further on Paul, Matilda or your line, I would love to hear about it!

Debra, I have not found anyone that has pictures of the old store. Would love to though! There are pictures of the area where the store used to be in this post: https://seekingsusie.com/2012/06/07/walking-ancestral-land-with-cousins-2/

I have now found that most likely Paul and Matilda are not the right parents for my Mary Jane Willis. About three years ago I attended a Genealogy Fair at my local library and there was an Indian expert there and lo and behold Paul and Matilda Willis was the example family he used in his talk. My Mary Jane did not go on to Oklahoma so I had to remove this set of parents from her. If you have any information that is different from his I would like to know. I had thought this Mary Jane was my great great grandmother due to her being from Alabama and having a child named Matilda but the naming patterns although good in many cases is not always correct.
