DEATH TAKES FORMER LOCAL CIVIC LEADER
Mrs. Minnie Elizabeth Hooks, 87, who made a major contribution to the civic, social and cultural life of Texarkana during her long residence here, died at 11:20 a.m. Friday at her home in Galveston, Texas. She was born in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, but spent a major part of her life in Texarkana, leaving here 25 years ago to join her son, Dr.Charles Hooks of Galveston. During her residence here she served as secretary of the Young Women's Christian Association and organized the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was also a member of the Lone Star Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. An active member of the First Baptist Church, she taught a Sunday School Class for many years. In addition to her son, she is survived by a nephew, R.E. Higginbotham of Texarkana, and a grandson, Charles Hooks, Jr. of Houston. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the East Memorial Chapel with Dr. Tom J. Wilbanks, officiating, assisted by Dr. Lory Hildreth, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Mrs. J. J. Creekmore at No. 10, Oak Hill Place.
