And the Winners Are…

Posted on by 0 comment

Congratulations to 1st place winner of the Fold3.com one year membership:  Michelle Harris who said, “I’d probably like to be my 6th great grandfather, who was a cherokee chief and diplomat and negotiated with the British government in the 1700s.”

Congratulations to 2nd place winner of the Newspapers.com one year membership:  Kookie Hemperley who said, “After giving this much thought, I would like to spend the day with my grandmother, Emma Pearl Bain Martin and her son, my uncle, Ray Houston Martin. I would like to know how Granny Pearl survived the Depression with an out of work ill husband that died leaving her with children to raise and no income. Uncle Ray was killed in WW II in Tunisia at the age of 27. I have to tried to obtain his service records but have been unable to do so due to the fact that the repository that housed them burned. Since they both died before I was 2 years old, I have no memories of either of them , I would like to know them in person not through documents.”

Congratulations to 3rd place winner of the $30 gift certificate to Blurb.com:  Ken Wilder, who said, “If I could, I would pick to be my great, great grandfather, James Banks of Georgia. He was a civil war veteran who had to file for his pension as being indigent. He was reported to have to depend on his daughters to support. I can’t even begin to imagine how he might have felt about having to do that.
If I could travel back and be James, my hope would be that there would be a way to have made it easier on him and his family.

I will be contacting you soon with your prize information!

FYI – I use a plugin that chooses the winners for me, it’s totally random and I have no say in it.

Happy 2nd Blogiversary Our Families Untold Stories!

Posted on by 8 comments

I just can’t believe it’s been two years to this day since I started this blog and made my first post.

Two Years

My, how the time has flown.

I have made so many discoveries about my family and shared so many special moments with new-found cousins, and cousins that I met just last year that already it seems as if I have known them a lifetime.  Had I not started this blog, my life would not be what it is today.

I didn’t break a brick wall this past year, but I put some chips in a few.  I’ll keep chipping away and plugging on, and telling our stories here.  I guess it’s just what I do now.

I know you are chomping at the bit to find out what goodies I’m giving away this time, but first I would like to share some statistics with you from my site.

OFUS Stats second year

I know last year that I told you how many cousins I had met, and how many pictures I had identified, and it’s so much more over the past year, there is no way now to keep up with all that.  I have been blessed beyond words.

Without further ado, and just like last year, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking this journey with me.  I couldn’t have done this without the support of each, and every one of you.

So, to show you my appreciation, I’m going to be giving away some super prizes.  I know you are just itching to get your hands on them!

First up, a one year membership to Fold3.com.

It’s been one year to the day since I started this blog and made my first post.

Wowza, what a journey it has been!

1 Year Cake

To celebrate, my niece Alix got me this wonderful cake, wasn’t that sweet of her? Don’t worry, you will get to celebrate too if you stick around and read this post all the way through.

But first, I would like to share with you some statistics from my site.

OFUS Stats first year

I know that 9,402 views isn’t that much compared to most blogs, but I never dreamed that many people would take the time to look at a blog about my family and their stories.

On a more personal level, these are some other accomplishments that have happened because of this blog.  I have connected with 32 cousins, identified 7 photos just from posting them on my “Find Me Friday” posts as unidentified photos, I have connected 6 photos with a member of their family, and I have made friends with several other family historians who never cease to amaze me in what they are willing to do to help a Newbie out, especially when it was of no benefit whatsoever for them to do so, and here’s the best part; only one rude email received. (You know who you are!) Not bad, eh??

I can’t imagine what the next year will bring, the discoveries that will be made, the cousins that I’ll find, or the relationships that will be forged.  I just can’t imagine it topping this past year.  However, I don’t doubt for one moment that it will top this year and this time next year I’ll be back bragging about all the new cousins that I have found.

I know for me that this journey has changed me in many ways.  Finding my ancestors and learning about their lives seemed to put mine in perspective.  Every time I discovered a new ancestor or relative, it was like I was filling in the pieces of my soul and for the first time I had a better understanding of who I was.  Not only who I was, but where I came from.

And, not to brag or anything, but my tree is full of good people.  Ok, maybe I will brag a little but I’m proud to claim every one of my ancestors that I have discovered.  They make me, well…. me.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking this journey with me.  I couldn’t have done this without the support of each, and every one of you.  To show my appreciation, I’m going to be giving away some super prizes.  I know you are just itching to get your hands on them!

My grand prize winner will receive:

Military Monday – Using Fold3.com

Posted on by 0 comment

Yes, I’m still here.  Barely though.  I’ve been fighting a case of the shingles and let’s just say that I haven’t felt like doing much of anything but scratching lately.

I’ll be doing several posts over the next few days to catch you all up on what’s been going on around here.  Also, my one year blog anniversary is coming up and you should really keep checking back because I will be doing a give-a-way to celebrate!

One thing I have been working on while being sick is getting my paperwork together to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Yes, I’m totally crazy to have taken on such a task while being sick, but honestly I have been working for two years to get the paperwork I needed and so the last month has just been about tying up loose ends.

Loose ends which Fold3.com enabled me to tie up from the comfort of my home so I didn’t have to spread the shingles out to the nice people at the History Commission.  I know they are grateful.  🙂

For my Daughters of the American Revolution application, I have been working on documenting my lineage up to Thomas Bullard, my 5th great-grandfather, a private in Capt. Sharps Co. 10th Regiment, as I mentioned in this post here.  I was able to find all the documentation I needed about his role in the American Revolution on Fold3.com.

This is just one of the many pages of his service record, and pension files that they have on their website.

For my United Daughters of the Confederacy Application, I have been working on documenting my lineage up to Kennedy Wade Ball,  my 2nd great-grandfather, a Commissary Sgt. with the 11th Texas Cavalry who was wounded by a member of his own company on May 9th, 1862 in action near Farmington, Mississippi during the war between the states.

Oh, how do I know this??

Why, thanks for asking!  Fold3.com of course!

I found all his muster rolls, the casualty list of the wounded and dead from the action near Farmington, Mississippi and his wifes widow’s pension, all on Fold3.com

Here is the casualty report that lists him.  Totally never expected to find anything like this.

By the way, I’m totally not affiliated with Fold3.com nor am I getting paid to make this post. I’m just totally happy about the fact that being at home sick, I was still able to obtain much-needed paperwork without leaving the house.

It’s a win/win situation for me and the people at the History Commission, right??
